FRESH FINDS
I didn't know what to expect from this song after Kaytlin's debut single "Coming of Age," but I don't think it was this. Regardless, I wasn't disappointed. The guitar has a crispness that reminds you of taking a deep breath on a brisk fall day, and the chorus is so goddamn catchy it's got me pumping my fist like Nick Miller listening to "Cotton Eye Joe." That's the highest of compliments I could give any song.
To be honest, I might have related to this song a little too much seeing that my family's communication skills consist of bringing up some life-changing event casually in conversation two weeks after the fact as if it was a routine dental appointment. For instance, when I was 18 years old, my parents had moved to Utah, and I stayed in Texas to graduate high school. My mom came into town, and I decided to call her to see what she was up to. This is more or less how the conversation went: "What are you up to?" I asked. "We're wedding dress shopping," she said. "Oh, for who?" I asked. "You're sister," she said. "Oh, I didn't know she was getting married." There was a similar conversation when my sister got remarried. My mom called me, asking if I could take my brother to the airport on a Friday. When I asked why, she replied, "Oh because we're driving up to Montana. Steph's getting married." Again, I had no idea. In my family, we may not shout it out, but we certainly don't talk about it.
