Today's local spotlight is the song "Say That You Love Me (feat. Doumie and Detzany)" by Ethan James Young. There’s something about this song that feels oddly familiar. It feels like I hit rewind on the clock 25 years to land in a world dominated by 90s R&B with a substantial dose of Christina Aguilera’s self titled debut album and maybe even a little bit of TLC. Maybe even more TLC than Christina? I don’t know. I’m just spitballin’ here. But it’s this kind of familiarity that makes you (especially if you’re a millennial) feel like a little piggy wrapped up in a nice warm croissant and thrown in the oven to bake at 375°.
With concerts coming back I’ve been exposed to a burgeoning local music scene in Provo, Utah that is thirstier than the sexually deprived college residents which dwell there. To my non-Utah readers I’d apologize, but that would be the least sincere apology in my own short lifetime which is saying something because I once was forced to apologize to a senior on the BYU women’s swim team my freshman year because I said her voice sounded terrible a fact which was objectively true. Her voice sounded like a concrete mixer. It was raspy from being sick combined with overuse, and she was yelling at someone fifty yards away. In short, I will not apologize for my coverage of the Provo music scene because it is dope.
