FRESH FINDS
There’s a quality to the synths in "Useless" that I can only describe as a combination of a dishwasher, the PS2 loading screen, and certain soundbites from The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past.*
Now I’m going to be serious for a few sentences. As someone who is on the doorstep of 30, the lyrics, "I didn’t think I’d make it past my 20s" hit extra hard. The lyrics feel honest and genuine, all while feeling like an Onion article about how millennials are coping with growing up through 9/11, a recession, Trump, a pandemic, social injustice everywhere, a housing crisis, and being told we’re lazy and the cause of many problems in the workplace at the same time. And whether it’s because I help the rich get richer in my day job as I observe all of the aforementioned atrocities, or because I feel a little jaded that I’m just coming into my own at 29 and that I lost most of my 20s to depression, these lyrics are the most relatable I’ve found in a very long time. As summer comes to a close, enjoy one last entry for what Goldmyth calls "moody girl summer."
*I don’t know why I have had Zelda on the mind lately. This is the third time I’ve referenced it in the last 4 posts. Sorry if you haven’t played them. 10/10 would recommend.
