FRESH FINDS
If you were to describe my demeanor—my vibe—you'd probably go for something like dull, grey, or boring. I am not necessarily a walking ball of sunshine. Someone once said that they felt nothing when they hugged me and that they might as well be hugging a tree or an inanimate object. And whether that was because of the depression or who I really am deep down, that’s why it’s always exciting to find something that will break my walls down and let the sun shine through.
This week, my friends, that just so happens to be “Sunshine” by Nicole McMahan. Inspired by sugar and spice and everything nice, but not least of all love, “Sunshine” is the self-care anthem of the year, though if need be, it can double as a love song to someone else. It has the characteristics that defined and brought R&B of the 90s to the forefront of the music industry, all while adding a modern twist. If this were 2010—which I am declaring the pinnacle of having a song for your alarm—I’d choose this song, so I could wake up every morning to its opening line, “Hey Gorgeous, good morning.”
