FRESH FINDS
When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade, OR you can make lemon bars. Let’s be honest, unless it’s a hot summer day, and you’re really thirsty, you’re almost always going to go for lemon bars. If lemon bars are on the table, you’re probably going to sacrifice the lemonade and drink water because lemon bars are friggin' delicious.
And when life gives you melons, you make a sweet baroque pop music, awesome music videos with puppets, and start a band called The Mellons. What The Mellons did on their latest single, “Hello, Sun,” was more than just water, sugar, and some lemon juice. It is making the most of what life gives you. It is maximalism on a budget. It is indie movie darling Everything Everywhere All at Once. It’s making lemon bars instead of lemonade. This song is as if The Beach Boys sang a mix of a slowed down “Build Me Up Buttercup” by The Foundations and “No Rain” by Blind Melon.* Some of my best friends growing up had a cartoon picture in their house of antelopes jumping over a ravine and a bunch of circles with concerned faces and legs falling into the ravine with the caption “Antelopes can when cantelopes can’t.” Hilarious picture. One of my favorites. And while I’m not sure if these Mellons are cantelopes, but one thing is clear: they sure can.
*Hunting down that comparison took me a total of two days. Please congratulate me on it. Coincidence of it being another band with melon in their name? I think not!
