FRESH FINDS
First, I woke up in the middle of the night wrote, “the anti “Wannabe” by the Spice Girls, but less pop and more rock,” in reference to this song. Then I went back to sleep with a smile on my face, completely content with myself.
I don’t want to delve too deep into that thought from 3:45 in the morning, but let’s just assume I had something there. Regardless, this song was a pleasant surprise. Not that I disliked like the previous two iterations of the Aces (one iteration for each of their first two albums), but "Girls Make Me Wanna Die" breathes new life into them, if anything for the following reason: Is that a ska influence I smell (because yes you smell ska) on the opening riff? Once the whiff of ska dissipates, the song gives me Ten Things I Hate About You energy. Letters To Cleo playing “I Want You to Want Me” while on top of the school energy, with a pride twist that Kele Okereke would gush over. It has immense potential for music montages in movies where people dance or move around sped up. And a run time of 2:15? Fuck me. Songs under 2:30 just slap different, like when the protagonist finally slaps the douchebag (or in the case of Ten Things I Hate About You, punch him in the face twice, and one good, clean knee to the balls). And then Julia Stiles will give an impassioned poem, you’ll realize what you're missing, and you'll get the girl in the end. But there will be a lot of self loathing and agony before you get there. Girls, amirite?
